This past weekend my friends and I went to Venice, Italy for the weekend. It has always been a dream of mine to go to Venice and ride in a gondola. It is such a romantic city and being that I am a hopeless romantic, it was the perfect place for me to visit.
We arrived on Friday after a long morning of traveling. We checked into the hostel and then we were off. We got hold of a map and navigated our way around the entire city. We went to Saint Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal, Saint Mark’s Square, and many other beautiful sites. After hours of walking, we went back to the hostel to rest for a few minutes. We then went to dinner at this great pizza and pasta restaurant. After dinner we walked around the city and stumbled upon the student/young adult hang out spot. It was very different than Barcelona’s night life. Everyone was sitting in circles on the floor talking and drinking. In contrast, in Barcelona, everyone goes out to bars or clubs. It was a very different scene. Since we did not know anyone, we felt somewhat awkward and decided to go home and get a good nights sleep. On our way home we stopped for gelato. I got carmel and mint. It was delicious. Once we got back to the room we played the game catch phrase. It was a lot of fun. We finally called it a night around 12:30 am.
The next day we were up early in order to eat the free breakfast the hostel provided for us. I had toast with nutella. We then went upstairs and got ready for the days adventures. We got onto a water taxi and went to Murano. Once we got off the boat we were greeted with some rain, but that was not going to ruin our day. Murano is an island known for making glass. All the stores there were filled with beautiful glass animals, plates, jewelry, etc. We had so much fun looking around in all the shops. We had the opportunity to watch a man blow glass and make a glass horse and vase. It was very interesting and amazing to watch. Next up on the agenda was Burano. Burano is the island known for all the colorful houses. It was so cool. I loved the colors of the houses, especially the pink and purple ones! I want my future home to be either purple or pink. We grabbed some pastries for the road and then took the water taxi back to Venice.
Once we were back in Venice we went shopping in the little stores for presents for our friends and family. I bought myself and my friends venetian masks. There were so many options. There were so many colors with such different intricate details on each mask. It was hard to decide which ones I wanted to buy. I also bought my mom a special gift. We then brought our souvenirs back to the hostel. After that we went on a gondola ride. It was the one thing I wanted to do when we were there. I was in heaven. I have always dreamed of going on a gondola ride. It was so much fun and something I will always remember.
After the gondola ride we all sat on the boat dock, talking and just taking in the view. Eventually we got hungry so we went to dinner at the most amazing restaurant. We all ate so much. I had italian pizza! It was incredible. After dinner we went back to the “student” hang out spot and met some students from England studying abroad in Venice for the semester. We joined them for a bit before leaving and heading home. We had to be up early for our morning flight.
It was such an incredible weekend and something I will never forget. I had so much fun and got to see so many beautiful sites. It is beyond gorgeous in Venice. I highly recommend traveling there.
